In Awe Of Orca For Your Money

By Shari Black Velvet

Serj Tankian is one of the hardest-working and most creative men in rock. Or rather, music... Because Serj is a man with no boundaries that allows inspiration to come to him from his muse in whatever shape or form it wants to come in. This Summer he released 'Harakiri', his third solo album, while the past year or so has also seen him complete his first real symphony, 'Orca', as well as a collaboration with Jimmy Urine (Mindless Self Indulgence) - 'Fuktronic', and a jazz-fused album entitled 'Jazz-Iz-Christ'. Recently Serj set off on his Harakiri World Tour. The tour includes a date in Austria where Serj will join forces with Das Karussell orchestra to bring 'Orca' to life - with the help of Kickstarter and the fans that have pledged to back him.

While we focus on Serj's 'Harakiri' album (our favourite full-length of Serj's yet) in issue 74 of Black Velvet, out now, which Serj graces the front cover of, here's a small video clip where we chat to him about 'Orca'. He tells us how exciting it was to use Kickstarter, how 'Orca' is his most personal and compelling piece of work so far, and how captive animals deserve their freedom.
